Taiwan: Danshui Day Market & ShiDa Night Market (Day 4)

February 14, 2012 -  Happy Valentine's Day!
Caution: Heavy picture content

It was Andrew and I's first day on our own since his dad had to go back to work. We took the "greyhound" type bus into Taipei from Hsinchu late in the morning. It took us a little while to find the bus station but thanks to my awesome Mandarin, we were able to navigate our way there. We planned to pay Grandma a visit and then spend the rest of the day with Diana - I was so excited! We were a bit behind schedule because of Andrew (what else is new?). After getting into Taipei, we took the MRT to  Taipower Building stop where Grandma lives and stayed about an hour. Diana came to meet us at the MRT station and she brought along one of her friends from the hostel, Pat. Andrew and I had nothing to eat or drink since we woke up so we were super hungry. It was a gorgeous day (probably the nicest for the length of time we were in Taiwan); 70s and sunny. Diana suggested that we head to Danshui for their day market. I was stoked - I love markets!! Danshui was pretty far, we took the MRT to the very last stop on the red line. We walked and ate - it was a lot of fun checking everything out. Diana took us to her favorite joint selling vermicelli stuffed in tofu with some kickass sauce. It was amazing....I wish Andrew and I hadn't shared one.

"Ah Gei" Vermicelli stuffed tofu skin with secret sauce - PHENOMENAL!

"Ah Gei" Meat stuffed fish balls and soup

We shared an order of each - total regret!!

Taiwan weeping willow type trees are everywhere

Danshui - a romantic "getaway" from the city

Turkish ice cream - so chewy and slimey

Me and Diana at Danshui - wish it wasn't so foggy here!

Diana said Danshui is known as a popular romantic place for couples to hang out. That made sense since it offered great food and awesome scenery - perfect views of water and mountains. What a perfect way to spend Valentine's day :). Before hopping back on the MRT, we stopped by for a quick donut fix:

Mister Donut - Taiwan's Dunkin'

Of course he had to get the teddy bear donut :)

My chocolate ring donut was very "QQ" aka chewy. Yum!

MRT - you can walk through the entire train - no cart concept

We took the MRT to Ximending for some Ah-Chung famous intestine noodles and to walk around. Ximending is a popular place where lots of young ppl hang out (i.e., high school students) and there's lots of shopping. Wish I picked up souvenirs here but I got a tummy ache so I lost my train of thought...

No tables - grab a chair and eat up!

We were quite tired Ximending and decided to take it easy and go check out Diana's hostel. We were originally planning to go climb Elephant Mountain to check out the best views of Taipei 101 but we were all pretty tired to do any mountain climbing. Andrew also wanted to see what a hostel was like. After resting up at the hostel, we wanted to go check out a poodle dog cafe to play with dogs! Unfortunately, they were all full so we decided to hit up ShiDa Night Market first.

Picked up some delicious meat buns

Juiciest and best meat bun ever

Night market stands

Pineapple cake with butter - it was okay - not warm at all so butter was solid

Definitely my favorite food from Taiwan - essentially Asian hotdogs

Thank you Diana for introducing me to this amazing food - make a truck of this!

Rice casing with Taiwanese sausage and pickled veggies - out of this world awesome

ShiDa Night Market - so crowded even on a Tuesday evening

"Swa bao" stand - see below

Pork and pickled veggie sandwich - Peking duck style

Beef noodle shop - strands of noodles are hand cut from the block of dough into the cooking pot

Triple beef noodle soup: I loved the broth, Andrew loved the noodle, and Diana loved the beef

Devouring the broth - hope it wasn't MSG!

Food stand with tons of selections

Chicken hearts, gizzard, butt to name a few

Delicious fried salt and pepper chicken

After eating our hearts out at the night market, we finally got seats at the doggy cafe. We sat down and ordered drinks. It was good to sit down and relax. I thought it was a pretty cool concept to be able to play with dogs and eat - although probably not sanitary. If NY had a place like this, I would go all the time - definitely a dog and food lover's heaven.

Brown poodles are so adorable!

At poodle restaurant with Diana and Vivian

They bid their customers farewell! Crazy cute!

Back on the line for those juicy buns once again...

We grabbed one last bun and bid farewell to Diana as she had an early flight out Taiwan headed to Vietnam the next morning. Andrew and I caught nearly the last bus back to Hsinchu - it was close! Thanks Diana for showing us around! <3 I had so much fun!

Taiwan: Touring Sun Moon Lake (Day 3)

February 13, 2012

We woke up pretty early in the morning and had to take advantage of the hot spring bath again before we needed to check out. We took one the night before after dinner but we did not have the views since it was night time - check out the am view:

After checking out, we planned the rest of the day touring Sun Moon Lake via Boat, Gondola Lift, and Bus as part of a tour package. The Boat took us from one side of the Lake to the other where we boarded the lift to enjoy aerial views, and finally taking a bus that loops around the entire lake. We casually strolled around and took lots of pictures.

After the bus tour, we took the bus to HSR to get back to Hsinchu. We were quite hungry by the time we got back home since we didn't really have lunch (we just snacked on fruits and random stuff we packed with us). Andrew's dad took us to the college campus food court nearby (National Chiao Tung University - #2 in Taiwan) and we had hot and sour soup and fried dumplings. Yum! A good change from unlimited buffet stuffing your face type of eating.

Taiwan: Wen Wan Resort & Sun Moon Lake (Day 2)

February 12, 2012

We woke up really early from jetlag. We grabbed a quick bite from the breakfast joint next to Andrew's dad's apartment with an interesting note. We each got a ham and egg sandwich and hot soy bean milk to-go and ate on our bus ride to Sun Moon Lake.

Thanks for not peeing everywhere!!

Some bombass hot soy bean milk

Linsanity all over local newspapers. Andrew's doppelganger >;)

We took the HSR shuttle to HSR to a bus to get to Sun Moon Lake, the whole trip took about 3 hours. The weather couldn't have been better ; it was in the 70s and sunny but funny enough, you see everyone rocking their bubble jackets. Apparently Taiwanese people can really handle the heat (very hot and humid summers) but are very sensitive to the cold. To them 70s is chilly. Sun Moon Lake is a very popular Taiwan tourist destination as it offers amazing views of the crisp blue water and voluminous mountains.

Sun Moon Lake

Andrew's Dad had plans for us to stay at the Wen Wan Resort at Sun Moon Lake for a night since we were about 3 hours away from home. For $800USD a night, it offered amazing views and amenities; the automatic toilet itself was smarter than many humans I've encountered. Surely, all this came with a hefty price tag. Thanks to Andrew's Dad, we were able to enjoy the luxury of it all.

After checking into the hotel, we did not leave the hotel and we spent the rest of the day checking out the amenities and awesome views of the Sun Moon Lake. We had lunch buffet in the hotel, where I tried passion fruit for the first time. It was basically all seeds (as pictured above) and I didn't even know how to eat it. I sucked on the juice, which was pretty sour, and spit out the seeds. However, the seeds are actually edible. After lunch, we lounged around and went to the jacuzzi at the pool level. For dinner, we had an 8 course dinner at the hotel restaurant. After dinner, we took a stroll around the hotel yard and took a hot spring bath in our room. So relaxing!

Taiwan: Grand Hotel & Meeting Grandma (Day 1)

February 11, 2012 (Taiwan Time)

We arrived at TPE a bit earlier than 7:30am. Andrew's dad was already at the airport to pick us up. He had arranged car service to drive us back to his apartment in Hsinchu which is a good 45min drive from TPE and Taipei. We got back to his apartment and quickly showered and freshened up. By the time we were ready, it was still pretty early in the afternoon. We took the shuttle to the High Speed Rail (HSR) to go to Taipei. I'm not sure why but I was a bit excited to go on the HSR - maybe because I was just excited to be in Taiwan or that I heard a lot about this cool/convenient train system.

Waiting for the Shuttle to High Speed Rail

Hsinchu Station - Hsinchu is considered a college town

After taking the HSR to Taipei, we needed to transfer to the MRT (subway) and then another shuttle bus to take us to the Grand Hotel where we had a lunch buffet. The food was really good overall but being that it was a buffet, I always feel like there's the factor of quantity over quality. Though, it was very high quality food. I think it cost about $30ish USD per person which is pretty pricey for a meal in Taiwan. After lunch, we walked around the Grand Hotel - there were lots of lanterns in the lobby area (given that it was only a few days after Chinese New Year was over) and a small shopping area in one of the levels. We also got free vouchers from lunch for free pictures on the upper level, so we went to check that out. We lastly went to the outdoor deck to check out the view of Taipei.

The Grand Hotel

Really love the local fruits!! Wax apple was my favorite - it's a cross between an apple and watermelon. The green fruit was also really good - cross between apple and asian pear

Lunch Buffet at Grand Hotel

We went to visit Andrew's grandma in Taipei and as you can tell from the picture below, she was SUPER happy and excited to see Andrew. As per Andrew, he is her favorite grandchild. We stayed for a little while and then headed to the lantern festival in Taipei City Hall.

Grandma's so happy to see Andrew and vice versa

The weather was misty and foggy but we still managed to get by without an umbrella. Jetlag really started to kick in and I was exhausted by early evening. We took a quick stroll inside Taipei 101 and then took the subway and bus back to Hsinchu for some well needed rest.
